SSI for a child with a disability
What it is. A monthly cash payment from Social Security for a child under 18 with a qualifying disability, when the family's income and resources are limited. In Florida, SSI approval brings Medicaid automatically.
Who it's for. The child must have a condition causing "marked and severe" limitations expected to last at least a year. Social Security counts part of the parents' income ("deeming"); the exact limit depends on your household. The SSA income-limit screener (opens in a new tab) shows the limit for your household type.
First step. Download the Child Disability Starter Kit (opens in a new tab), then fill out the online Child Disability Report from ssa.gov/benefits/disability/apply-child.html (opens in a new tab). SSA calls back within 3–5 business days to start the application. Or call 1-800-772-1213 to set up an appointment — the call date can count as your filing date if you follow through within 60 days.
Good to know.
- Decisions take about 6–8 months.
- For some severe conditions (Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, very low birth weight, and others), SSA can start paying for up to 6 months while the review continues (not repaid if the medical claim is denied; can be if income or resources were over the limit).
- A denial can be appealed within 60 days.
Contact. SSA 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Find your local office (opens in a new tab).
Cost. Free to apply.
