SNAP food benefits

What it is. A monthly food allowance on an EBT card, used at most grocery stores. Direct assistance, run by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Free to apply.

Who it's for. Florida households with income at or below about 200% of the federal poverty level. No asset limit for most families. If a household member receives SSI or another qualifying disability benefit, only the net-income test applies and that person's own medical costs over $35/month are deductible (special diets don't count; a diagnosis alone doesn't trigger this). A parent who is the caretaker of an incapacitated family member, or of a child under 6, is excused from work requirements.

First step. Apply online at myaccess.myflfamilies.com (opens in a new tab) (about 30 minutes). If DCF requires an interview (not every application needs one), it sends a notice telling you how to complete it; phone interviews are available.

Need food this week? DCF screens every application for expedited service from your answers. Very-low-income households can get benefits within 7 days.

Good to know.

  • Standard decisions take up to 30 days.
  • Renew on or before the 15th of your last benefit month.
  • Getting SNAP automatically meets the income test for WIC.
